Green Gourd Drying Gourd Dried Gourd
This gourd was recently harvested. Notice the stem has begun to dry. The gourd will have a light, waxy coating and will be noticeably heavy from it's water content. This gourd was harvested about two months ago. The mold is a natural process and normally will not injure the gourd, but will add natural blemishes and color. This gourd is now craft ready. It has been soaked in a mild bleach/water solution, and scrubbed. It is very light in weight and when shaken the seeds can be heard rattling inside.

In some areas, gourds can be successfully dried in the garden. After harvest they can be placed on pallets. Leave adequate space between each gourd, do not allow them to touch. They should be periodically turned. We have tried this method in Utah with limited success, our best results were obtained by taking the gourds indoors and placing them on shelves in a spare room. From our experience, we typically lose about one half of our harvest. You can expect better results in a warmer, drier climate. Expect a drying period of six to nine months.
